Spanning 38 square miles in the County of Hertfordshire, Hertsmere is just North of London but within the boundaries of the M25 (Greater London orbital motorway). The borough includes: Aldenham, Bushey, Borehamwood, Elstree, Radlett, Potters Bar, Shenley and South Mimms.

The borough has excellent connectivity:

  • To the M25, M1 and A1(M) which directly link the borough to the rest of the UK.
  • 5 Airports (Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, Heathrow, City) all within 45 miles and its own private airfield Elstree Aerodrome.
  • Rail services directly  connect the borough to London’s St Pancras, Euston and King’s Cross and to the East Coast, Great Northern, Midland Main line (Thameslink) and London Overground line. St Pancras is only an 18 minute rail journey.

 

Strong, Diverse and Enterprising Economy

  • Nestled in the centre of the ‘golden triangle’ (Cambridge, London and Oxford), Hertsmere’s top sector is professional, scientific and technical representing nearly 20% of businesses.
  • Other top sectors are construction, information & communication, business administration and support services and retail.
  • CreativeThe borough also has a thriving creative sector with BBC Elstree (the home of Strictly, Eastenders and Holby) and Elstree Studios (of Star Wars fame) within the borough and Warner Brothers on its doorstep.  Elstree is also home to the Elstree University Technical College supplying creative skills and talent to the industry.
  • Hertsmere experienced significant growth in number of enterprises between 2009 and 2013  –  the borough’s growth was 49% (or nearly half the enterprise growth experienced by the whole of the county of Hertfordshire).
  • 31% growth in the number of start-ups between 2009 and 2013 – significantly outstripping growth across the UK and Hertfordshire County and highlighting Hertsmere for the entrepreneurial borough that it is.
  • In 2011, Hertsmere was ranked in the top 10% of boroughs for business and enterprise nationally. (Local Future’s Group)
  • In 2013, Hertsmere was ranked 35th of 379 areas and 11 regions of the UK for competitiveness (Competitiveness measured the sustainability of businesses alongside the economic welfare of individuals). (Cardiff University)
  • In 2014, Hertsmere ranked in Top 15 areas for employment business & economic growth in Grant Thornton’s ‘High growth index of places’. One of only two local authority areas outside of London areas to rank in the Top 15.
  • Creative Hertsmere Hertsmere Borough Council’s economic development strategy seeks to continue this growth with plans to boost economic development and business growth  in the area  with the aim of creating 8000 new jobs by 2026.

 

Population and skills

  • Hertsmere’s population is c.100,000 and forecast to grow to 116,500 by 2028. Its working population is 63,200.
  • Hertsmere has a highly skilled population – significantly outstripping regional and national norms
    • Nearly 60% of hold a level 2 qualification or greater (5 O level equivalents or greater)
    • 31% have a level 4/5 (a first degree or higher qualification).
  • Nearly half of Hertsmere’s residents hold director, senior management, professional and technical positions.

The majority of the Hertsmere borough is green belt and includes both urban and rural areas of Aldenham, Bushey, Borehamwood, Elstree, Radlett, Potters Bar and South Mimms.
